Description
MEM A rare 9ct gold and enamel lapel badge commemorating the famous Wales v New Zealand match of 1905, the shield centred with the Prince of Wales's feathers between a leek and silver fern leaf, crested with the initials 'WFU' (Welsh Football Union), maker's mark 'W.J.D' for William James Dingley, Birmingham 1905, weight approx.14.4g. On 16th December 1905 at Cardiff Arms Park, one of the most famous games in the history of rugby was played when a Welsh team which had not been beaten at home for six years came up against the All Blacks team undefeated in 27 games. Teddy Morgan's try settled a bruising encounter 3-0 in Wales's favour and sowed the seed for a victory which will live on as long as the game is played. This rare, perhaps unique, medallion was possibly awarded to players (and committee members) before or after the game. The quality of the enamelling and quantity of gold used implies that the Welsh Football Union recognised the importance of a match so aptly described as "the greatest game ever played".
