The present painting is the work of an Italian artist active as a follower of Carlo Maratta. The work depicts the Adoration of the Shepherds and is derived from an original fresco by Maratta painted for the Palazzo del Quirinale in Rome. The present work is in reverse, which indicates that it was taken from a print rather than from the original. Maratta´s work was often published in prints; one of the most famous sets were published by Giacomo della Pace at the end of the 18th century.

The work appears in a good overall condition considering its age. The canvas is laid down on a modern board. The varnish is dark and chilled in parts, the paint surface is thin in some areas. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered areas of retouching and restoration throughout the canvas, but especially affecting the vertical edges and the lower parts of the depiction. The lighter pigments are still in good order. The wooden frame is in good condition and only shows small traces of age and wear. The framed work measures 97 x 79 cm and the stretcher measures 88 x 70 cm.

Carlo Maratta (1625-1713)

The painter Carlo Maratta began his artistic career as a pupil of Andrea Sacchi (1599-1661) in Rome. Sacchi was a follower of the classical academic tradition and influenced the young artist decisively. Besides altarpieces, mainly on behalf of the Popes Alexander VII and Clement XI, Maratta painted many portraits and became one of the leading painters in Rome in the late 17th century. In addition, the artist occasionally worked as a fresco painter and sculptor. In 1700, Maratta was appointed president of the Accademia di San Luca, which was followed by his appointment as court painter of the French King Louis XIV in 1704. When Carlo Maratta died in 1713, he held a large workshop with a number of assistants in Rome. His paintings are today exhibited in major collections such as the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
