Description
Germany, 17th century
South German School
Dimensions: 95.5 x 148 cm
Provenance: Private Collection, Germany
The present subject is certainly one of the most significant themes in the Christian iconography
The present piece was painted by an artist most likely active in South Germany during the 17th century. It depicts the Entombment of Christ in a wide landscape with a castle. The subject is one of the most represented in the history of Christian art and reflects the importance of the event in the Christian liturgy. It is often part of a whole cycle of the Life of Christ and usually follows the Deposition of Christ or the Lamentation of Christ, whereas it sometimes also appears in combination with one of these.
The canvas of the painting is relined and shows some abrasions of the paint surface at the edges as well as a number of scattered discolored areas of restoration. The paint surface is thin in some parts, but the impasto is fresh in the lighter pigments. Inspection under UV light reveals a number of scattered areas of retouching, especially affecting the darker parts, the sky and the edges. The stretcher measures 95.5 x 148 cm.
