This oil painting by Max Clarenbach shows a summer landscape view, influenced by impressionist paintings. Clarenbach presents a summer meadow with blooming flowers in the foreground and an adjacent grove in the image background, executed in a muted color palette and loose brushwork with occasional bright color accents.
The oil painting is signed lower left ‘M. Clarenbach.’. The image carrier is laid down on cardboard, which is mounted on hardboard. In the upper right and left side small touch ups visible under UV. On the top right light scratch mark, around the edges slight abrasions caused by framing. The paper shows slight buckling, otherwise overall in good condition. Dimensions of the image 37 x 45 cm. Dimensions framed: 42 x 52 cm. The frame with slight traces of use.
Max Clarenbach (1880-1952)
Max Clarenbach was born in Neuss in 1880. At the age of 13 years Andreas Achenbach recommended him to attend the Elementary class at the Düsseldorf Academy. Influenced by French Impressionism and the associatedplein air painting, Clarenbach created with preference winter landscapes of the Lower Rhine area, depicting winding rivers, which reflect the trees in the surface. In 1909 he was involved in the establishment of the ‘Sonderbund’. After the death of Eugen Dücker in 1917, Max Clarenbach succeeding his former teacher and became Professor for landscape painting until 1945. (cru)
