Illustration of a classical theme from Greek mythology; paintings by Dupuy fetch up to €100,000 at international auctions

The present painting by Paul Michel Dupuy shows a classic motif in the visual arts, namely the Judgement of Paris, an episode from Greek mythology. On the left the artist depicted young Paris, holding the apple of discord, and on the right the goddesses Aphrodite, Athena and Hera. Zeus had chosen Paris to crown the most beautiful among them. Aphrodite, who promised the world’s most beautiful woman, eventually won the Trojan prince’s favor. This subject was painted by numerous artists from Botticelli to Rubens, Cézanne and Kirchner. Dupuy’s version stands out due to the skillful post-impressionist play of light and colors, which is typical for the artist’s oeuvre and earned him the title ‘peintre de la vie et du mouvement’ (painter of life and movement).

The painting is overall in good condition. The canvas has been relined. There is craquelure and light loss of paint along the edges due rubbing of the frame. In the center, above the heads of the goddesses, there is a small, inconspicuous blemish to the sky, which has been retouched. The signature ‘P. M. Dupuy’ can be found on the lower right. The framed work measures 68.5 x 81 cm, the stretcher frame measures 49 x 65 cm.
