This oil painting by Konstantin Semenovich Vysotskij depicts a beautiful landscape scene. A simply dressed woman with white headscarf is rendered in the center of the image. The shepherdess smilingly looks at the viewer. In the foreground a couple of goats are grazing. With fine brush strokes and delicate dabs of color, the Russian artist has created a lively spring composition in harmonious colors. The field flowers are hinted at with colorful accents in yellow, red and blue. Landscape scenes of this kind are typical of Vysotskij’s oeuvre. The artist was fascinated by Latvia’s wild nature, which he captured his work time and time again.



The painting is overall in very good condition. There is slight craquelure as well as scattered spots of retouching in along the edges and inside the image. The work is signed ‘K. Vysotskij’ in Cyrillic and dated ‘1928’ lower right. The frame shows some abrasions. The framed work measures 83 x 73 cm, the stretcher frame measures 78 x 67 cm.



Konstantin Semenovich Vysotskij / Vystotsky (1864-1938)

From 1885 to 1891 Konstantin Semenovich Vysotskij studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under Vladimir Makovsky and E. Sorokin. Already during his studies he was awarded two silver medals. He worked as an illustrator for various magazines and illustrated several books. From 1895 onwards Vysotskij participated in numerous exhibitions. In 1918 he emigrated to Latvia where he worked as a teacher and freelance artist. In the 1920s and 30s his work was shown in a number of solo exhibitions in the Riga City Museum. In addition, the artist took part in group exhibitions in Berlin, London, Helsinki, Copenhagen and Los Angeles. Vysotskij’s oeuvre mainly comprises genre scenes and idyllic landscapes with animals.
