In few vigorous strokes sketched landscape on La Gomera, where the artist lived with his community since 1986; the auction record for one of his paintings is currently around €92,000

This work by Viennese artist shows a sketched landscape in bold, impasto brushstrokes. It is a view of the Spanish Canary Island of La Gomera, probably of El Cabrito, in which the community around Otto Muehl moved to after the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl. Muehl founded the community in 1970 as an artist residential community that experimented with psychoanalytic methods, later resulting in the so-called ‘action analysis’. Otto Muehl is one of the most important representatives and co-founders of the Viennese Actionism. In the 1960s, he organized happenings in form of orgiastic rituals, with which he tried to overcome sexual and religious taboos and constraints.



The work is signed and dated lower right in pencil ‘Mühl 1.4.88’ and titled in pencil lower right ‘E. C. (El Cabrito) 2’. The cardboard is slightly soiled around the edges, somewhat yellowed/browned. Slight pressure mark upper center, otherwise overall in good condition. Sheet size: 62 x 88 cm. Dimensions framed: 66.5 x 92 cm. The frame with traces of use.



Otto Muehl (1925-2013)

Otto Muehl was born in the Austrian Grodnau in 1925. After the war, he first studied art education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna to become a teacher and worked as an art therapist on the side. Along with Hermann Nitsch he performed his first action event in the early 1960s. His art changed from the traditional compositional painting towards the so-called Wiener activism with a focus on psycho-dramatic actions and sexual dynamics. (cru)
