The present watercolor by Paul Jenkins (1923-2012) dated 1963 delights with its beautiful color combination. There are compact color fields, merging one into another, in the right and lower part auf the painting, which form an attractive contrast with the thin color fields and lines in bright colors in the left part of the watercolor.

The artist was a major exponent of the American Abstract Expressionism and has created works that reveal the echoes of the Lyrical Abstraction and the Tachism. Spontaneous improvisations, the unconscious and painted sensations became the protagonists of the images.



The painting is signed with ‘Paul Jenkins’ to the lower margin. The reverse bears the title ‘Phenomena Green is as Green Does’, the date ‘Paris 1963’, the artist’s signature ’Paul Jenkins’ and a personal dedication from the artist. The sheet is mounted under a mat to the upper edge and framed in a black metal frame under museum glass. It is in good condition with light foxing on the reverse. The overall dimensions, including the frame, are 71 x 56.6 cm. The sheet measures 37.5 x 27.5 cm.



Paul Jenkins (1923-2012)

The American painter Paul Jenkins moved to New York City in 1948. He there studied at the Arts Students League with Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Morris Kantor. He created primarily paintings in acrylic and oil as well as watercolors on paper. Works by Jenkins are part of international museums and art collections and are on display, for instance, at the Whitney Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Gallery and the Centre Georges Pompidou.
