Description
American Federal Mahogany Butler's Secretary, early 19th century, School of Michael Allison, New York, the rectangular top above a conforming case fitted with a drop-front secretary drawer opening to a baize-lined writing surface and a variety of drawers and cubbyholes flanking a central cupboard, over three graduated long drawers, raised on bracket feet, h. 43", w. 43-1/2", d. 23-1/2".
Condition
In good "as found" condition. The piece exhibits normal mars, wear, abrasions and indications of age and use. The finish appears to be an old or original finish that was over-sprayed (probably with shellac) some time ago. There are several older veneer repairs, and some lifting of the wood at those repairs, most notably at the perimeter edges of the top drawer. Losses to cock-beading of top drawer of about 3" and 1". There is one equally large loss to the cock-beading of one of the lower drawers, and a number of smaller losses. One drawer lock is missing. Drawer pulls appear to be original. Bottom of feet may be slightly truncated.
