Arnulf Rainer (b. 1929)

Arnulf Rainer was born in Baden near Vienna in 1929. In 1947 he encountered international contemporary art first time during a British Council exhibition in Klagenfurt, which showed works by Paul Nash, Francis Bacon, Stanley Spencer and Henry Moore. After graduating from a trade school, Rainer was accepted at the Akademie für angewandte Kunst in Vienna, which he left immediately. Neither did he stay at the Akademie für bildende Künste. In 1951 he held his first exhibition together with a group of artists. In the same year Rainer, together with Maria Lassnig, visited André Breton in Paris. Shortly afterwards his works were exhibited in a gallery in Frankfurt, one of the first manifestations of ‘Art Informel’ in Central Europe. Between 1953 and 59 he began working on a series of so-called reductions, precursors to his famous ‘Overpaintings’. In 1966 Rainer was awarded the Austrian State Prize for graphics. Two years later, the Museum of the 20th Century in Vienna held a first retrospective. In 1981 he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts and was given emeritus status in 1995. Rainer now lives and works in Enzenkirchen and Tenerife. Arnulf Rainer’s works can be found in the collections of the MoMA in New York, the Tate Gallery in London and the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. In 2009 the the Arnulf Rainer Museum was opened in Baden. (tm)
