Gerhard Richter is one of the most sought-after contemporary artists; the signed poster ‘Olympia’ of the Neues Museum Weserburg fetch up to €2,200 at international auctions
The poster of the Neues Museum Weserburg in Bremen that is provided with a complacency signature shows the painting ‘Olympia’, that Gerhard Richter created in 1967. As it is typical of early works by the artist, a photograph gave the motif, which he then rendered in large format on a canvas in exploration of painterly possibilities.
The poster is signed lower right with black felt pen ‘Richter’. It is laid down on cardboard. The margins are slightly unfresh. The overall condition is good. The frame is in good condition with minor signs of wear. The image measures 73.5 x 48.1 cm, the sheet 84.3 x 59.5 cm. The framed dimensions are 85 x 60.5 cm.
Gerhard Richter (b. 1932)
The German artist Gerhard Richter works and lives in Cologne. From 1971 to 1993 he was Professor for painting at the art academy in Düsseldorf. After his training as a stage set and advertising painter he began his studies at the art academies in Dresden and Düsseldorf. Richter’s works are presented internationally, amongst others at the Biennial Venice, as well as at large retrospectives in New York and lately in the New National Gallery in Berlin. Gerhard Richter used photographs as models; he enlarged these motifs and then transferred them into his own preferred media – paintings and prints. He is known for his abstract, expressively colorful works which are created with color layers, abrasions and over painting. Richter’s experimental engagement with actuality and the painterly staged reality are visible in his entire oeuvre which has been honored widely.
