Encyclopedia of African Methodism (cover title) / 1816-1916 Centennial Encyclopedia of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (Philadelphia, 1916) First edition; a second was not published until 1947 (and despite “Vol.1” printed on front cover, this was the only volume ever issued) Original cloth binding. 387pp.+index. Profusely illustrated. Containing some 500 invaluable biographies of clergy and lay leaders of the Church. Signed on front fly-leaf by Wright.
Containing principally the Biographies of the Men and Women, both Ministers and Laymen, whose Labors during the Hundred Years, helped make the A.M.E.Church what it is; also short Historical Sketches…and General Information about African Methodism…Being a Literary Contribution to the Celebration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Formation of the African Methodist Episcopal Church Denomination. Containing some 500 invaluable biographies of clergy and lay leaders of the Church. Signed on front fly-leaf by Wright, the first B.A. graduate of the Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youth (headed by his father) and the first Black Ph.D. graduate, in the new field of Sociology, at the University of Pennsylvania. He was later President of Wilberforce University as well as a Bishop in the A.M.E. Church. Tipped in by a former owner is a leaflet Wright issued 35 years later about a hurricane that destroyed the AME churches on Jamaica.
