Description:
Wallace Thurman, “Negro Life in New York’s Harlem”, Pp.132-145 in Haldeman-Julius Quarterly, Vol. 2, No. 1, October-November-December 1927. Original wrappers, complete issue of 192 pages. Illustrated with a photo of Thurman and 4 drawings of Harlem street life by Richard Bruce (Nugent).
Included in a periodical with other contributions by Clarence Darrow and Upton Sinclair, is this seminal portrait of Harlem, “the Mecca of the New Negro”, at the start of “black America’s cultural Renaissance”. Bruce, the illustrator, was Thurman’s roommate, a protégé of Alain Locke, friend of Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston – and the first noted African-American writer and painter to freely acknowledge his homosexuality.
