Included in a periodical with other contributions by Clarence Darrow and Upton Sinclair, is this seminal portrait of Harlem, “the Mecca of the New Negro”, at the start of “black America’s cultural Renaissance”. Bruce, the illustrator, was Thurman’s roommate, a protégé of Alain Locke, friend of Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston – and the first noted African-American writer and painter to freely acknowledge his homosexuality.
