Milton ("Hal") Halberstadt (1919-2000) studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the New Bauhaus founded in 1937 by designer-painter László Moholy-Nagy. He served as an assistant to both László Moholy-Nagy and György Kepes.Halberstadt's San Francisco studio was known for fine large format studio photography. He was a leader in San Francisco's golden age of advertising design. Clients included Del Monte, Dole, S&W, Paul Masson, Pan-Am Airlines, and Royal Viking Lines. Halberstadt's experiments with the tone-line development processes result in wonderfully abstract prints with an almost etched quality to the images. His images have been exhibited internationally and are held in the permanent collections at Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian Institution, The George Eastman House, Oakland Museum of Art, and elsewhere.
