Map of Nevada n the early years of the silver boom, just four years after the discovery of the Comstock Lode, the first major silver-mining district in the United States, concentrating on that area. Shown are Lake Tahoe (called Lake Bigler), Virginia City, Washoe City, Carson City, Gold Hill, Genoa, etc., and the Summit of the Sierra Nevada. Issued by the Surveyor's General's office as Ho. Reps. Ex. Doc. no. 1, 37th Cong., 3rd sess. (Serial 1160). Edward Fitzgerald Beale, credited on the map, was serving as Surveyor General of California and Nevada, having been appointed by Abraham Lincoln to that post in 1861 during his many years of public and military service.
