[War of 1812]. Andrew Jackson Pay Receipt Signed. One partially-printed page, 7.75" x 2.75", n.p. [near Mobile], n.d. [circa September 1814]. In April 1814, Jackson, who since 1802 had previously been in command of volunteers (as a major general) from his home state of Tennessee, was commissioned a brigadier general in the United States Army for his gallantry and leadership at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend [Alabama, March 27, 1814]. One month later he was made a major general in command of all American troops on the southern frontier. Here he receives his second paycheck at his new rank, in full:

"Received of Captain Walters [Waters] Allen Assistant District Pay-Master, Seven Hundred & fifty three Dollars 33 Cents being my Pay in full, from the 8th June 1814 to the 30 September 1814 having signed duplicates hereof."

Two weeks prior to receiving his pay, Gen. Jackson was in Mobile and successfully defended that city at the First Battle of Fort Bowyer (September 14-16, 1814). The defeat of the British at Mobile convinced them that an invasion of New Orleans may be more successful. Having received intelligence that the British were debating a run on New Orleans, Jackson moved his army in that direction, entering the city on December 1, 1814. The British launched their assault on January 8, 1815, and Jackson whipped them soundly, making him a national hero. Just as reports of the burning of Washington reached him weeks after the fact, news of the signing of the Treaty of Ghent two weeks earlier had reached neither the British invasion force nor the Americans defending the city. It was not until February that news reached Louisiana that the war was over. Jackson's next pay order would include pay for the Battle of New Orleans.
