The creations by Piero Fornasetti are fascinating up until today. His large number of subjects, with which he decorates nearly every piece into a distinctive object, ranges from architectural motifs over trompe-l'oeil painting to his popular solar images. However, his most famous subject is the portrait of opera singer Lina Cavalieri, which he chose because of her classic, austere beauty. It appears in countless variations and is therefore called ‘Tema e variazioni’. The small tripod table offerd here illustrates this image as silkscreen printed on the wooden tabletop.
The table bears the manufacturer's label ‘Fornasetti Milano’. It is in very good condition with minimal signs of wear. Its height measures 54 cm, the diameter 36 cm.
Piero Fornasetti (1913-1988)
Piero Fornasetti was born in Milan in 1913. A scholarship enabled him to study at the Accademia di Belle Arti in 1930, where he studied painting. After two years he left the academy and worked as a freelance artist. In 1933 he participated in the Milan Triennale. An encounter with the designer Gio Ponti led him into the direction of interior design and he soon began to decorate the surfaces of furniture with architectural images or trompe l'oeil painting. In 1970 he opened his own shop in Milan, where his designs can be purchased until today. (afa/cru)
