A comprehensive collection of fabric samples from the 1980s, some with rare pattern designs

This collection comprises ten textile samples with various print patterns, produced by Mira-X. Specifically, these include the patterns Columba and Diora from 1983, Orion and Rubin from 1984, Opal from 1984-85, Cinna and Magnum from 1985, Secundo from 1987 and the two patterns Terzo, Quarto. As ever Panton built the patterns of the multi-colored designs from the three basic geometric forms circle, triangle and square. But whereas in the 1960s and 70s large-scale and simple repeats in bright colors were creating the typical look of Pop Art and the Space Era, Panton’s designs from the 1980s are complex and detailed. The colors too are more muted. In 1987 and 1988 Verner Panton was the curator of the furniture fair in Copenhagen and Brussels, where these samples, stretched on wooden frames, were exhibited.

The fabrics measure c. 260 x 130 cm (on fabric with the pattern Terzo measures c. 150 x 130 cm). They are in excellent condition with minimal signs of age and wear.

Verner Panton (1926-1998)

The Danish architect and designer Verner Panton is one of the most important and influential designers of the 20th century. After studying at the Technical University in Odense and at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen he worked for Arne Jacobsen. He quickly developed his own personal style. Panton preferred artificial materials and loud colors, conferring the pop art aesthetic to furniture and interior decoration, which strongly influenced our image of the sixties and seventies. His designs such as the Panton Chair and the Moon Lamp are considered as milestones of design history until the present day. (afa)
