Peter Behrens (1868-1940)
Peter Behrens (1868-1940) was a German architect, painter and industrial designer. It is no exaggeration to describe his appointment as artistic director of AEG in 1907 as a turning point in design history; it was the first time a major international company had employed a single designer to advise on all aspects of its corporate identity, accommodation and output. Besides creating new premises for the company - including the Turbine Factory, itself a landmark of modernism - he devised a new range of ground-breaking and consciously forward-looking electrical products.
AEG
Allgemeine Elektrizitäts-Gesellschaft Aktiengesellschaft (AEG) was founded by Emil Rathenau in 1883 in Germany (Frankfurt am Main) as producer of electrical equipment. Peter Behrens had a huge influence on the corporate identity of AEG. He was appointed as artistic consultant in 1907. His sense of modern purist design was manifested sustainably. (cru)
