FREDERICK GUTEKUNST 19TH C. PAINTED PHOTOGRAPH: (1831 - 1917, Philadelphia) Oval photograph of well to do man with full beard, incredibly well painted, reverse with photographer's information and address 712 Arch Street, Philadelphia. Housed in ruby red velvet oval case stamped with photographers information; 3 1/2"h x 2 7/8"w. Gutekunst opened in 1856 and in 1866 moved his business to 712 Arch Street. He was known for his portraits of Walt Whitman, Thomas Eakins, Ulysses S. Grant and Woodrow Wilson. In 1876 his studio created a ten-foot long panoramic view of the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia was considered the largest of its time.
