Description
Fashistskaya stavka — Krasnoarmeiskaya popravka! (Agit-Okno No. 33) [Fascist’s Bet, and Red Army’s Call (Agitation Window No. 33)], a stenciled 1943 poster by Victor Deni (Viktor Denisov, 1893–1946, Meritorious Art Worker of the Soviet Union). 83 x 61 cm.
While this would probably be technically inaccurate, the poster being offered could be best described as an artwork for the nearly identically looking lithographed poster by Deni published by Iskusstvo in 1943. It was prepared as a display window poster; these are typically hand drawn or stenciled, as only a small number of copies are needed.
Typically, display-window posters are produced on a short notice in response to the latest news, but Deni’s design didn’t seem to be time sensitive. Thus, the decision was made that it should be mass produced; notably, the poster being offered bears on reverse an “APPROVED TO PRINT” notation. One noticeable difference between this design and the lithographed version is that in the latter the “Agit-Okno no. 33” inscription had been removed.
