Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nasca, ca. 100 BCE to 800 CE. The striking step motif of this textile was favored by the ancients of the Andes and other Pre-Columbian cultures; however, the abstract nature of its design also appeals to the modern eye. Composed of wool from alpaca or llama and cotton from the coastal valleys, the textile was dyed with natural dyes that have retained their vibrant hues of raspberry, chocolate brown, and toasty caramel for thousands of years. A golden border of fringe completes this fine piece. The high degree of skill and imagination imparted by the pre-conquest Andeans in their woven work along with the fine and carefully chosen materials elevates this textile to fine art. Mounted on dark brown linen. Textile itself measures 88"L x 49"W
