The Water Carrier – a classic and popular motif. A subtle bronze execute din great detail by the sculptor Ludwig Vordermayer, who enjoyed great success especially with his expressive depictions of animals!

The present bronze is a work by the German sculptor Ludwig Vordermayer. It depicts a naked walking on a rectangular naturalistic plinth, carrying a pitcher of water in his right hand. His gaze is lowered, careful not to spill anything. Skillfully the artist, who is primarily known for his animal sculptures, was able to render the human proportions and create a graceful little sculpture.

The sculpture is signed ‘Vordermayer’ on the naturalistic plinth. It is in good condition with light signs of age. The left arm is restored beneath the shoulder. The marble base is chipped in two places. The height including the base is 34 cm, the figure measures 29 cm.

Ludwig Vordermayer studied at the Unterrichtsanstalt of the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin. He was a pupil of the sculptors Peter Breuer and Karl Bega. From 1893 onwards Vordermayer participated in the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. He is mainly known for his natural representations of animals. The Berlin foundry Gladenbeck listed several works by the artist in their catalogues. (tfa)
