The Louis XVI style pendulum clock was made by the French clockmaker Etienne Maxant, renowned for his high quality clocks. The round brass movement has a power reserve of one week, the half-hour strike occurs on a bell. The enamel dial with Roman hours and Arabic minutes has pierced gilt brass clock hands. The gilt bronze case in the form of a vase, supported by a fluted shaft with bead and reel, egg and dart as well as acanthus decoration, rests on an oval base with rectangular side ends and fine, tapered round feet with revolving grapeleaf decoration. The sides are adorned with hanging festoons below large big faun mascarons and snakes with eagle heads as horns. Above the dial and on the back sculptural ribbons. The fixed cover is embellished with braided bands, acanthus borders and bead and reel decoration, crowned by a flower and fruit bouquet.
The clock is in very good original condition with light signs of age and wear. The rear glass shows tiny notches. The height measures 49 cm. Wind-up keys are enclosed. Long term precision and durance cannot be guaranteed. (tfa)
