An Autobiographical Fantasia, first edition, inscribed by Stephen Tennant to Rex Whistler "Stephen to Rex with love Jan.1927" with verses by Edna St.Vincent Millay in turquoise ink on front free endpaper and note "Avignon 'La Ville Sonnante'" on half-title, signed by Whistler in ink at head of title and with his bookplate (printed in sepia) on front pastedown coloured by hand , 1926; Doctor Donne & Gargantua, number 55 of 215 copies signed by the author and with a frontispiece by Whistler, original cloth-backed patterned-paper boards, uncut, slip-case, 1930; Narrative Pictures, 1937 § Sitwell (Osbert) and Margaret Barton. Brighton, inscribed by the author "For dearest Rex, with much gratitude for the lovely cover. Osbert 1935" in ink on front free endpaper, 1935 § Sitwell (Edith) Rustic Elegies, Whistler's copy with his bookplate, 1927; Gold Coast Customs, Whistler's copy with his faint inscription in white "Rex Whistler his book" on rear panel of dust-jacket, 1929; Alexander Pope, 1930; Bath, 1932; The English Eccentrics, with engraved bookplate of Loelia Duchess of Westminster by Whistler, 1933, first editions , some plates and illustrations, some spotting, all but the second original cloth, most uncut, the third, fourth, seventh and eighth all with dust-jackets by Whistler, most a little rubbed and soiled, [Whistler & Fuller 585, 429, 489, 478, 430, 451, 587] ; and 2 others by the Sitwells and 2 small pencil sketches by Whistler for a monogram for Osbert Sitwell , 8vo & 4to (13) Whistler met the aesthete and consumptive Stephen Tennant at the Slade School of Art and they became close friends, often travelling abroad together for Tennant to convalesce after a bout of illness. He stayed with Tennant and his mother on the French Riviera in early 1927. Whistler and Edith Olivier both knew all the Sitwells and first went to stay at Renishaw together in 1928.
