Description
poster, colour lithograph, c.750 x 570mm., text cut away at foot, lightly faded with some browning, a few small scratches, framed and glazed, [Whistler & Fuller 653], London Underground Railways, [1928]. In 1926 Whistler was commissioned to paint the walls of the Refreshment Room at the Tate Gallery. His mural In Pursuit of Rare Meats, relating an expedition through a fantasy landscape past classical follies and mythical beasts, continued right round the room and was unveiled to great acclaim in December 1927. Sadly the triumph was short-lived as the basement room was damaged by flooding in early January 1928. The poster d epicts two ladies taking tea being absorbed into the mural as the distinction between the landscape and the tea table becomes unclear.
