The spears have long, thin cylindrical shafts made of bamboo, ending in a variety of fine tips. Some are openwork, barbed or with multiple prongs and decorated with rattan bindings. The key piece is a large Sepik ceremonial dance paddle with figural carving and inlaid cowrie shells.
The numerous island nations of Oceania used spears of this kind primarily for fishing or pig hunting. Some would also be used in ritual dances to beat a rhythm against the shield.
The pieces are in good condition with signs of wear consistent with age and use. The length ranges from 103 to 340 cm. (tfa)
