Figural vessel with expressively modeled face
The present pottery jar dates back to circa 200-400 AD and was made by a member of the Moche culture, which flourished in Northern Peru. The canteen is shaped in the form of a dignitary with a bulbous body and slightly flared neck depicting a face. There are traces of white pigment on the sides and upper portions of vessel. Moche ceramics are known for their animated and lifelike representations. They vary widely in shape and theme, often documenting significant social activities. Common are also portraits, as in the present case, believed to represent actual individuals.
The vessel is in good condition with signs of wear consistent with age and use. It shows no apparent restoration. The height measures 14 cm. (tfa)
