In 1958, Life Magazine invited Marilyn Monroe and the rather unorthodox photographer Richard Avedon to create a series of photos targeting the heading ‘Fabled Enchantresses’. Avedon decided to present Marilyn as celebrated actresses of different eras, including Marlene Dietrich, Clara Bow, Lilian Russell, Theda Bara and Jean Harlow. The work offered here depicts Marilyn playing Clara Bow who created and introduced the “flapper’s image” of young girls in the Roaring Twenties.

The C-print has been made on Fujichrome Professional Paper and is verso fitted with the studio stamp ‘Richard Avedon’. It is also inscribed with red pen ‘R. Avedon Marilyn’. The work is in very good condition and was framed and matted. The image size is equal to the sheet size of 25.5 x 20.5 cm. The framed work measures 51 x 36 cm.

Richard Avedon (1923-2004)

Richard Avedon first gained fame as a fashion photographer in the 1950s, when working for the Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. His creative campaigns finally set new standards in the field and may be discovered in one of his most famous works, depicting the US-American actress Dovima dressed in Dior in front of circus elephants. Richard Avedon was also an excellent portraitist. No matter if his sitter was a celebrity, an ordinary person, a war victim or a mentally ill individual, Avedon was always able to capture the sitter’s soul in front of the camera. His works are successfully traded on the international art market and were exhibited, for instance, in a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1978. (cbo)
