This portrait of Marilyn Monroe was created as part of a series in February, 1962. Willy Rizzo was one of the last photographers who portrayed the actress; the auction record for a photograph by Rizzo is set above €4,000

Italian-born photographer Willy Rizzo created widely celebrated photographs of Marilyn Monroe, Sir Winston Churchill, Salvador Dalí, Brigitte Bardot, Jane Fonda, Coco Chanel and Jack Nicholson. His photographs were published by leading magazines, such as Paris Match and Life. This portrait of Marilyn Monroe was created in February 1962 as part of a series. Rizzo was one of the last photographers who portrayed the actress.



The photograph is signed verso in black pen ‘Willy Rizzo’ and numbered ‘9/20’. On the back of the frame are various labels. The photograph is mounted with photo corners and a small adhesive stripe under a mat. It is in very good condition, only the frame shows slight traces of use. The depiction measures 39.8 x 25.7 cm, the sheet 39.8 x 30 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 61 x 51 cm.



Willy Rizzo (1928-2013)

Willy Rizzo came to Paris from Naples in the 1930s. Already at the age of 12, he had begun taking photographs. After the Second World War, he was commissioned by the Point de Vue to travel to Tunisia and document the aftermaths of the conflict in North Africa. The series that he created there was published by Life magazine. Rizzo worked as a photo journalist in France and he created numerous portraits of famous personalities. He travelled to the US, where he succeeded in portraying celebrities. In 1948, his 20-year activity for Paris Match began. He got married to the actress Elsa Martinelli and gained insights into the world of the movie stars. Rizzo was also a furniture designer. Some of his designs are today held by collections, such as the Metropolitan Museum in New York. (tm)
