The photograph ‘The Deep Devotion’ by Jan Saudek depicts one of the typical slightly disturbing sceneries of the Czech photo artist. In front of an old wall, a repeated feature of Saudek’s work, is a topless woman leaning forward to kiss a man’s hand who is leaning only half inside the picture. The photograph is colorized, a typical characteristic of the photo artist.



The photograph is signed lower right in black ballpen ‘Jan Saudek’ and inscribed below on the paper framing ‘#363/IV Model 2nd print ever made, finished: March 27, 1890’. A certificate by the artist is enclosed, this work is numbered with the limited edition 2/15. The photograph is in very good condition. The dimensions are 40.1 x 30 cm.



Jan Saudek (b. 1935)

The Czech photographer Jan Saudek’s childhood was marked by a number of traumatic experiences. His parents intermarried and during the Second World War his father was deported to the ‘Ghetto Theresienstadt’, a national socialist collection camp. After the war he began to take photographs during the 1950s. He sympathized with the Protests of 1968. Therefore and also due to his popularity in the West he was being watched until the fall of the Iron Curtain. Significant aspects in the work of Saudek are sexuality, sensuality as well as ageing and death.
