The photograph ‘The Book’ by Jan Saudek depicts one of the typical slightly disturbing sceneries of the Czech photo artist. In a decayed room are a lady of middle age and in her arms a young undressed girl who are reading together from a book. On the right is a glass window, similar to a church window, which is the colorized part of the work, which appears as a characteristic in every work.



The photograph is signed lower left in black pen ‘Jan Saudek’ and inscribed below on the paper framing ‘„#846 “The Book” Model print, print finished: June 1, 1895’. A certificate by the artist is enclosed, this work is the limited edition 15/30. The photograph is in very good condition. The dimensions are 30.9 x 33.5 cm.



Jan Saudek (b. 1935)

The Czech photographer Jan Saudek’s childhood was marked by a number of traumatic experiences. His parents intermarried and during the Second World War his father was deported to the ‘Ghetto Theresienstadt’, a national socialist collection camp. After the war he began to take photographs during the 1950s. He sympathized with the Protests of 1968. Therefore and also due to his popularity in the West he was being watched until the fall of the Iron Curtain. Significant aspects in the work of Saudek are sexuality, sensuality as well as ageing and death.
