BUSHRANGER Presentation Epergne. An important & impressive sterling silver candelabra centrepiece with hanging baskets, base engraved "Presented by the Colonists of Australia to Mr & Mrs D.G. Campbell in admiration of their gallant conduct in repelling the attack of the Bushrangers upon GOIMBLA N.S.W. on the night of the 19th November 1863". Amelia & David Campbell successfully defended their property "Goimbla" near Forbes (N.S.W) against the notorious bushranger BEN HALL & his gang. With the brave assistance of his wife Campbell managed to shoot John O'Meally dead before Ben Hall & John Gilbert fled. The attack was probably a turning point in the gangs fortunes as it tipped public opinion strongly against them, shooting at a woman was deemed completely unacceptable. Of particular note is the fact that this is the only known bushranger related presentation made to a woman & Amelia Campbells roll has been under played by history. Made by London silversmith Thomas Smily, circa 1862 & stands an impressive 72cm high. This epergne has been part of a private museum collection and is accompanied by several other items: 2 reproduction portraits of the Campbell's; reproduction picture of the moment Campbell shot O'Meally; a Westley Richards single barrel percussion muzzle loading rifle (the same as the one used by Campbell); a powder flask & tin of caps for the above rifle; a cabbage-tree hat (as worn by Ben Hall & O'Meally); a Calisher & Terry N.S.W. Police carbine & a colt 1851 Navy model percussion revolver. (10 items)
