Bourke B. Hickenlooper (1896-1971) was Lieutenant Governor and then Governor (1943-1945) of Iowa before gaining election to the U.S. Senate, where he served from 1945 to 1969. A very conservative Republican who headed the Republican Policy Committee (1962-1969), Hickenlooper often clashed with Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen, whom Hickenlooper considered too willing to compromise with Democrats. Hickenlooper served in the U.S. Army in France during World War I.
