Ivory. India, 1900 to 1st half of 20th cent.
This small ivory figurine presents the flute-playing Krishna, the eighth incarnation of the Hindu high god Vishnu. Krishna played while he was with the cow-herding girls and they performed their dances during the autumn nights. The carving shows him in his typical pose, leaning against a bull. Good old patina, mounted on a wooden base.
