Item Details
Description
Bronze. Ayutthya Kingdom, approx. 16th to 17th cent.
A very royal portrayal, particularly the facial features. Buddha seated in paryankasana on a lobed-cut throne fitted to the contour of his seat. One hand is resting on the lap, the other is executing the "calling of the earth to witness", symbolising the victory over Mara (= Maravijaya), the satanic tempter. The long, thin and curved fingers are typical for the Ayutthya style, but also the royal facial features with their noblesse. High arched eyebrows, looking slightly downward, the corners of the mouth swung upward. The vertically elongated head-form is ovoid, the vertical spiritual axis is pronounced through the ushnisha and ketumala (flame). Very slim samghati with small volutes on the front. Rests of gilding on the head, a lot of green patina due to age; minor damages - primarily on the backside - on the base.
