Good condition

This book was written by Swiss physician and humanist Heinrich Pantaleon in Latin language. It is the first edition from 1581 printed by Thomas Guarinus in Basel. The title page shows the woodcut printer’s device, followed by different woodcut illustrations throughout, including maps, some of them full page, portraits – one of the author amongst others – as well as ornamental initials. This first edition of Pantaleon's book treats the history of the Christian order of St. John and its deeds against the Turks, Arabs, and others.

Condition

The book is in an age-appropriate good condition indicating common signs of age and wear. The sheets are slightly browned and show some stains. The title page has a missing part in the lower right corner. The boards of the bookcover wear old library annotations. The title page and end paper show various library stamps. The woodcut prints are strong and clear.

Binding

The parchment binding of the time with Spanish edges is a bit wavy and bumped around the edges. it is slightly rubbed and stained, showing some losses on the right edge. The book's dimensions are 33.5 x 22 x 3,5 cm.
