Very rare early print in splendid baroque binding from a Benedictine monastery

Extremely decorative baroque binding with the coat-of-arms of the abbots of the Benedictine monastery Michaelbeuern in the Salzburg region. The volume comprises the author's works on moral theology and the supplement by M. Kresslinger.


Illustration

Romanic type in two columns. Title in back/red print. Several appealing woodcut vignettes and – initials. Dimensions of leaves: 33 x 20 cm.


Collation

27 unnumbered leaves, 765 pages, 29 unnumbered leaves index. Supplement 4 unnumbered leaves, 260 pages, 15 unnumbered leaves. The book is complete.


Condition

In excellent condition. Firm laid paper and strong impression. Paper clean and almost stainless. No tears or defective spots.


Binding

Original, blind-tooled pigskin binding over wooden boards with ornamentation and floral borders all the way round. Boards with magnificent armorial centerpieces of either Placidus II Maderer (1713–1731) or his successor Martin II Dorner (1731–1762) at the Benedictine monastery, dated 1731. Center panels with floral roll-tooling. Two intact brass clasps. Five raised bands and three blue edges. In excellent condition. Book block firm and stable. Boards very slightly stained. Dimensions of folio volume: 33.8 x 22.5 x 9.5 cm.
