3rd-4th century AD. A complex padlock comprising the lock case, hinged bar and cover; the case hollow with T-shaped keyhole to the centre of the upper face, saltire panel to one side and socket behind; the D-shaped bar T-shaped in section, hinged to one side of the case and engaging the locking mechanism from the underside (with barbed spring); the cover hinged at the upper edge, formed as the face of a putto with curly hair, three radiating lobes with ring-and-dot detail. 47 grams, 27mm (1"). Private collection, UK; formed in the 1980s.
