9th-11th century AD. A hollow ceramic vessel with broad shoulder and conical base intended to be filled with explosive liquid and a wick, and used as a hand grenade; domed rim enclosing the narrow mouth. 584 grams, 10.5cm (4 1/4"). English private collection; acquired in the 1970s.
