This rare or even unique form of the decorative wall map of Asia is a revised edition of the first edition published by Longchamps & Janvier in 1760. This maps contains the updated travel routes from 1779. Mondhare & Jean released this map in 1788 in an even more splendid edition. The map's corners are endowed with a large figurative cartouche as well as two detail plans of Madras and Pondicheri. The map is framed by a remarkably neatly made border with rich details in 17 historicizing colored engravings with motifs from Asian history and special buildings. Each of the splendidly colored fields is made like a small painting. With two text cartouches embellished in ornamentation in lower margin. Map printed from eight plates and jointed.
Condition
In very good largely original condition. The map was thoroughly restored and laid on Japon. Few small retouched blemishes. The originally somewhat dull coloring was refreshed and mended. Old smoothed creasemarks, partly with small rebacked blemishes. Small repaired marginal blemishes and a small closed tear from a hook in right, as well as a small white corner tear at top mended. Dimensions: 146 x 117 cm.
