Willy Rizzo (1928-2013)
Willy Rizzo began his career as a photographer. He photographed celebrities and playboys in France and across Europe. Much of his work was quite serious, however, including his coverage of Trial of Nuremberg. It wasn’t until 1966 that he shifted gears to furniture design, utilizing local artisans to produce his designs. His many friends, clients and other contacts admired the custom interior he created for himself in Rome and became his clients. Soon, Italian high society flocked to his doors. His pieces combined clean, simple lines and materials with bold, sculptural forms. When asked about his designs, Rizzo explained: “It was never about recreating classic styles in modern furniture, that wasn’t the point. It was about creating something new for a traditional setting”.
