Jonathan Scott Hartley (American, 1845-1912)
Jonathan Scott Hartley was a sculptor who studied under E.D. Palmer before attending the Royal Academy in London. He is known for his sculpted portraits of well-known cultural figures. His busts were often commissioned for display for public landmarks, such as the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. He founded the historic art organization in New York, the Salmagundi Club, which began as a sketch class in his studio. Today the club prides itself on the proliferation of American identity through art.
