Item Details
Description
Greece, 4th century - 3rd century BCE. As indicated by its name, the Lydion vase originated in Lydia, but was also adopted by potters in Greece, and became especially popular in Eastern Greece. As we can see in this example, the Lydion is a small spherical container, lacking handles, oftentimes used for storing perfume. The vessel stands on a narrow, relatively high foot, conical in shape. The neck meets the body at a rather acute angle and resolves in an almost horizontal lip. The smaller handsome greyware vessel is also a finely built form with an attractive profile demonstrating the ancient Greek's masterful wheel techniques. Dimensions are for Lydion vessel. 3.75"W x 4.13"H (9.53 W x 10.48 H cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private collection of William Dale, a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's, who acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern treasures during his tenure.
