Charming portrayal of a young woman of exceptional quality; The auction record for a painting by del Torre is currently over €27,000

This painting by Giulio del Torre was created in Venice and depicts a young Mediterranean woman sitting by a table and sewing. However, someone, presumably her lover, caught her attention, the white fabric lies abandoned in her lap while she examines her opposite with a questioning look. Her head resting in her hand, she seems to wait for him to make the first move. Characteristic of the works by del Torre, the composition features closely observed details, such as the spool of thread on the table, the thimble on the woman’s right hand or the shiny gold jewelry. In addition to his depictions of children, del Torre created some portraits of this kind in which he portrayed Italian beauties at work. However, the present painting is certainly one of the most interesting and most sophisticated works by del Torre.

The painting is signed upper right and inscribed ‘G. Torre del / Venezia’. It is in good condition. The edges are rubbed due to framing. Some paint losses in the border area are repainted. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 79.5 x 69.5 cm, the wood panel measures 41.6 x 29.8 cm.

Giulio del Torre (1856-1932)

Giulio del Torre studied at the academies in Vienna, Rome and Venice. He created mainly portraits and genre scenes, which depict life in northern Italy. With great fondness, he painted children in ragged clothing when playing on the road in compositions determined by an earthy color palette with shades of blue and gray. Del Torro's paintings are characterized by an unusually fine rendering of even the smallest details with which he enlivened his nostalgic compositions.
