Hans Herrmann is regarded a forefather of the Berlin Secession and ranks amongst the most well-known Berlin artists of this time. He owes his artistic success mainly to his Dutch subject matters; the auction record for an oil painting by the artist is currently set at above €19,000
The ‘Dutchwoman’ by Hans Herrmann is work of 1877. The lady is depicted in bust portrait in side profile. The clothing is indicative of a maid. The depicted lady is painted in immediate closeness, without narrative attributes and in front of a neutral and dark background, which makes it stand out from Herrmann’s other works.
The painting is signed and dated upper right ‘Hans Herrmann 1877’. Upper left is a pressure trace. The painting cardboard measures 69.7 x 46 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 79.8 x 56 cm.
Hans Herrmann (1858-1942)
Hans Herrmann studied at the academies in Berlin and Dusseldorf. During this time he made first journeys to Holland and Denmark. He returned to Berlin in 1885. He became a member of the Academy in Berlin in 1896. Together with Jacob Alberts, Ludwig von Hofmann, Walter Leistikow, Max Liebermann et al. he founded the progressive group Elf (resignation 1898). He was a member of the Munich Secession. Herrmann left behind a comprehensive oeuvre of Dutch subject matters. In addition, he is known for his landscapes inspired from his journeys, architectonic views of Berlin and woodcuts. (tm)
