This is a picturesque depiction of a cattle herd in wide landscape with mountain massifs in the background. The painter Benno Raffael Adam created primarily hunting scenes and animal pieces. The painting, executed in oil on a solid parqueted wooden panel, was created in 1849. The somewhat dry and hard coloration of the early works by Adam was replaced by fresher and livelier shades at this time.



The painting is signed and dated lower right ‘B. Adam 1849’. On the frame is a badge with the inscription ‘Benno Adam 1812-1892’. The condition is good with framing marks, small touch-ups and slight stress cracks in the wood. The wooden panel measures 54.1 x 61.5 cm. The total dimensions, including the frame, are 72.7 x 82.4 cm.



Benno Raffael Adam (1812-1892)

Benno Raffael Adam was trained at the fatherly studio and early began to lithograph his studies and pictures. He occurred as a painter with two animal paintings at the Münchener Kunstverein for the first time in 1835. He joined the association and gained first recognition. The further specialization on animal pieces and commissions by Herzog Adolf von Nassau followed. In addition, Adam also illustrated agricultural books about cattle breeding. Paintings of Adam are e.g. in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, in the possession of the Grand Duke of Luxemburg, the descendants of Archduke Karl Ludwig, the princes of Fürstenberg and in private ownership in Hamburg.
