Good condition
William G. Meadows was a specialist in landscape painting; a pair of landscapes has achieved an auction record of around €8,100
The present work shows a characteristic village scene by the British artist William G. Meadows, who was deeply inspired by traditional Old Masters paintings, typically known for their low horizon, virtuously shaped clouds and figural scenes to animate the sceneries. The present composition bears all these aspects in mind and also proves Meadows’ great artistic skills.
The painting is signed and dated lower center ‘W. [G]. Meadows 1861‘. The canvas is relined and only shows faint marks, where the frame has rubbed. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of retouching to the sky. The stretcher measures 76 x 127 cm and the framed dimensions 153.5 x 103 cm.
William George Meadows (c.1825-c.1901)
William Meadows was a son of the well-known Marine painter James Meadows, whose activity is documented in London. Little is known about William Meadows’ life, but he seems to have had a rather vagrant life, probably due to his financial situation. His preserved paintings mostly depict tranquil landscapes or classical Venetian vedutas. (cbo)
