Description
Ca. 1800, 206 x 154 cm, Central Asia, Uzbekistan

In specialist publications, Suzanis presenting a floral star at the centre of the field and four large flowering shrubs aligned diagonally towards the corners are almost invariably attributed to the city of Nurata, although the composition was also popular in Bokhara. Wonderfully light in appearance, this example centres on an eight-pointed star enclosing not only red but also four brilliant blue iris blossoms. Three flowering plants, one of them bearing further irises, two water jugs and a delicate panicle complete the composition. The very wide main border of open design shows flowering twigs and panicles aligned horizontally and, in the corners, diagonally. The proportions of the secondary borders are remarkable: the inner border is uncommonly narrow while the outer one is far wider than usual. - Good condition. Backed with canvas.
