Description
Mid 19th century, 218 x 148 cm, Central Asia, South West Uzbekistan
A Bokhara suzani in magnificent colours chiefly embroidered in the basma technique. The field displays the so-called Nurata design of a central star-shaped medallion surrounded by four flowering trees, with four larger flowering trees aligned diagonally towards the corners. A vase flanked by two panicles has been placed both above and below the medallion. The wide main border contains circular blossoms and palmettes, with green serrated leaves elegantly curving around them. The high gloss of the silk creates a sparkling appearance in this embroidery. – Several tears and minor holes. Not backed with fabric.
